Editor, The American Organist

PNP Staffing Group has been retained by the American Guild of Organists (AGO) to lead their search for an Editor of The American Organist.

Job Overview

Published monthly by the American Guild of Organists, The American Organist is the most widely read journal devoted to organ and choral music in the world. It is the official journal of the American Guild of Organists and the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America. The editor is a member of the staff of the national headquarters of the professional organization which serves approximately 13,000 members and 280 chapters in the U.S. and internationally. The association’s mission is to foster a thriving community of musicians who share their knowledge and inspire passion for the organ. The vision of the AGO is to engage, support, and uplift every organist.

The editor’s duties include supervising editorial and production staff as well as contract workers; soliciting, evaluating and editing submissions; determining monthly content; supervising design and production; selecting and distributing review materials; encouraging columnists; selecting letters to the editor; supervising budget, costs, and materials; conforming to publication standards of the organization and profession; and coordinating timely distribution. The Editor is responsible for the overall quality and success of the publication.

The Editor reports to the Executive Director of the AGO and works in accordance with policies set by the AGO leadership including the President, the National Council, and the Editorial Resources Board. Individuals reporting to the Editor include an advertising manager and various editorial and production assistants.

Requirements

Candidates must have a minimum of five years of professional or institutional journalistic experience in multiple aspects of publication including editing and production. Knowledge and ability in graphic design and layout are desirable as is a musical background and familiarity with organ or choral music.

Salary

Salary: $80,000 – $90,000/annual

AGO’s national headquarter is in New York City. The preference is for someone based in the greater NYC area who will work a hybrid schedule of remote and in-office. However, strong candidates who would work remotely from anywhere in the U.S. will also be considered.
